What?
Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) - when a person reacts to chemicals in the environment. These chemicals are usually petroleum based. When a chemical injury occurs, many persons become "Universal Reactors." Universal Reactors have symptoms to a significant number of substances in all categories of foods, molds, inhalants and chemicals. http://www.citlink.net/~bhima/

Who?
Q: Who is adversely affected by environmental exposures?
Given a great enough exposure to a substance, anybody is at risk for developing symptoms. The young are particularly vulnerable because their central nervous systems, liver, kidneys and other organs are still developing, making them more susceptible to the toxic effects of chemicals found in many consumer products. People with compromised immune systems, sensitive nervous systems, allergies and other disorders are also more susceptible, but nobody is completely immune.

Typically, the family history in many of these patients was positive for classical allergy, and the likelihood of migraine headaches, alcoholism, thyroid dysfunction, collagen vascular diseases, or psychiatric diagnoses in the family appeared high. A careful history of these patients might reveal a significant deterioration in their health after some identifiable event, such as redecorating the house, the arrival of a new baby, prolonged recovery from the flu, moving into a new building, or exposure to pesticides.

The Symptoms
The most frequent complaints in this survey of patients ranged from headache, fatigue, confusion, depression, shortness of breath, and arthralgia, to myalgia, nausea, dizziness, memory problems, gastrointestinal symptoms, or respiratory symptoms … Neurologic symptoms, including migraine, poor memory, confusional states or "brain fog," tremor, weakness, and numbness, seemed to top the list. Patients frequently reported anxiety, depression, irritability, and dizziness, and some also reported that noise particularly irritated them. On occasion, they reported being tearful, with a higher-than-usual incidence of addiction. A frustrating aspect for these patients (and their doctors) was a lack of consistent and pathognomonic physical indicators of MCS. Patients sometimes said, "I feel so awful, that if one more person tells me how good I look, I’ll scream!"

What About You?
How toxic is your body? By Angela Epstein
She's just a teenager and lives in the country - but Bethan already has 17 different gender-bending chemicals in her blood. As our disturbing tests reveal, many adults have TWICE that...and it's common household products that are to blame:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/

When?
Once people get the poison in their systems, their bodies are done permanent damage. That damage leaves the individual incapable of tolerating certain chemicals for the rest of their life," he said. "It's a problem that the medical and science community has known about for at least 40 years."

Theron Randolph, M.D., who practiced in Chicago, noted the chemical susceptibility problem in 1951. http://www.anapsid.org/cnd/mcs/bastienmcs.html

Where?
INDOOR AIR QUALITY (IAQ) IN SCHOOLS
Providing resources for School Administrators, Parents and Students
to improve the Indoor Air Quality in their schools, businesses, and homes.
Americans spend up to 90% of their time inside and "Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) studies of human exposure to air pollution indicate that indoor levels of pollutants may be 2-5 times, and occasionally more than 100 times, higher than outdoor levels." Children are more sensitive to pollution than adults. Schools have higher numbers of people in smaller spaces than most commercial or other indoor spaces. Children are expected to be at their peak concentration and attention levels when they are in school. Pollutants can reduce the cognitive abilities of children as well as adults.

Asthma
~ An EPA survey concluded that indoor air was 3 to 70 times more polluted than outdoor air.
~ Since 1980, asthma has increased by 600%. The Canadian Lung Association and the Asthma Society of Canada identify common household cleaners and cosmetics as triggers.

How Much Does It Take?
Q: How much of a product must I be exposed to before it is harmful to me?
This is a question for which there is no concrete answer. There are several issues that must be addressed at this point: 1) the cumulative effect of exposures to multiple products; and 2) the threshold at which any given individual will experience adverse health effects. …One factor that makes it difficult to predict the effect of environmental exposures is the fact that people all react differently to chemical exposures. Some people are capable of being exposed to seemingly high levels of a pollutant and not have any obvious ill effects, while others may immediately begin to exhibit symptoms of exposure. More often people might have a strong reaction to one pollutant, but little or no reaction to others.

Why Haven’t I Heard More About This?
With TDS (time-dependent sensitization) and enzyme deficiencies, animal models are now available to study MCS, however, lack of funding for basic research is still a major problem and getting what research is available into an established medical journal is even more difficult. For example, the Journal for Occupational Medicine is controlled by doctors employed by Dow Chemical Company, Eastman-Kodak, General Motors, and ITT Corporation.

What Happens at EHCD? The human guinea pig.
One of the most important things to do is to experiment with what works for you. We are all different, and react differently to substances. We are also different in what works in stopping a reaction, and what helps you when exposed to gasoline fumes may not help you when exposed to perfume or hand crème. So you need to experiment to see what does it for you, and they will give you the tools to do so. Does tri-salts help? How about a load of vitamin C? Can a shot of histamine help? Maybe a serotonin shot? Or will a trip to the sauna or the exercise bike work? And there are others, these are just the most common ones. Being here is a great opportunity to experiment, being away from the things you are normally exposed to at home.

Pesticides Harm Children!
Examples of the How Typical Pest Control Measures Can Hurt Children
A June l998 study by Philip Landrigan, M.D., Professor of Pediatrics at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in the Environmental Health Perspectives compared two culturally and genetically similar groups of Mexicans/Indians. The amount of pesticide contact was comparable to what is typically used in the USA for crops. One-half the children who were exposed to a total of 80 pesticide crop applications twice a year. This group was drastically different than the similar control group which had virtually no pesticide exposure.
Four to five year olds that were exposed to "registered" pesticide poisons:
• could not remember what they were told 30 minutes later,
• had less stamina,
• had decreased fine eye/hand coordination,
• could not draw a stick figure, they could only scribble
• had many disruptive behavior problems, particularly aggression.
This study raises very important concerns about the toxic effects of pesticides on children's brains and nervous systems. Bernard Weiss of the Department of Environmental Medicine at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry stated that the study highlights the need for more research, "It doesn't seem a surprise that you would see an effect, knowing what we know about pesticides and the elevated vulnerability of the developing brain."

Zeolites are natural volcanic minerals with an unique, complex crystalline structure. It's honeycomb framework of cavities and channels (like cages) works at the cellular level trapping, heavy metals and toxins. In fact, because it is one of the few negatively charged minerals in nature, zeolites act as magnets drawing toxins to it, capturing them in its cage and removing them from the body.

Wireless Schools? Not such a good idea!
With the ubiquitous deployment of EMR technology around the globe, it is often overwhelming for a grassroots organization like the EMR Network to meet every challenge. One issue, however, that demands every citizen's immediate attention is the push by several corners of the computer and communications industries to "unplug" our schools with wireless LAN's.

THE CHILD SCRAMBLER
U.K. Sunday Mirror, Thursday 27th December 2001
Scientists have discovered that a call lasting just two minutes can alter the natural electrical activity of a child's brain for up to an hour afterwards. And they also found for the first time how radio waves from mobile phones penetrate deep into the brain and not just around the ear.
The study by Spanish scientists has prompted leading medical experts to question whether it is safe for children to use mobile phones at all. Doctors fear that disturbed brain activity in children could lead to psychiatric and behavioural problems or impair learning ability.
